Today’s post is not so much about inbound or social media marketing, although I did put Mare Island Golf Club on the Foursquare map. And, enlightened their GM on how geolocation marketing may benefit them. Today is about sharing an experience of spending time and resources to give back to your community and help causes larger than you.
Some do this even in economic downturns, more however get involved and spend time and money during better economic times. I’d like to suggest even more could serve simply by giving their time and talents…
Economic Growth & Giving Back
I woke up the morning of April 30, 2010 with a sore body and a soaring spirit. Before I even heard the encouraging news that the U.S. economy grew 3.2% in the first quarter of this year, I had a feeling we were coming back, and giving back.
Yesterday (April 29), our local Kiwanis Club of Benicia held its 8th annual charity golf tournament. I’ve been a member of this club four years and served as its president last year. A year ago we struggled to get golfers, sponsors and other items we use to fund such programs as scholarships to high school seniors.
It’s somewhat of a faith-based venture – committing to funding the scholarships with the schools early in the year, then going out and raising them. The golf tournament is our major annual fundraiser and last year, in a sinking economy we just barely squeaked by to meet our commitments.
When you break it down and compare the numbers year-over-year you begin to see the difference a year, and rising economy can make:
- 2009 Results: 76 Golfers, 20 Tournament Sponsors
- 2010 Results: 100 Golfers, 35 Tournament Sponsors, plus substantial revenue increases in raffle and auction items – around 40% higher
Still, I know there are a lot of businesses hurting and trying to hang on. And this is not to say everything is coming up roses. But, there is a significant upturn occurring, not only in economic business growth, but in the spirits of people. People who are committed to their community, to youth and to giving back.
And for this, the Kiwanis Club of Benicia (and the youth served) are deeply grateful.
A Call to (Service) Action
Typically, at this point in a blog post, I’d invite you to comment or download a whitepaper. Today, I want to ask you to serve your community. Even if you can’t give out of your pocket, give of your heart and time. Your community needs you, and you will never feel more fulfilled as you get involved in giving back.
