The Value of Twitter for Local Business Marketing Redux

I am honored to contribute a guest post today on the subject of how a small-town (local) business can benefit from Twitter on Carolyn Higgin’s Marketing Fortune Company blog. Carolyn is a really smart marketer who I happened to meet on Twitter. She is one of the few but growing number of certified Duct Tape Marketing coaches. She’s also @FortuneMktgCo on Twitter.

Value of using Twitter for Local Business?

Here, I’d like to offer some additional perspective and background for the post. My passion is to help local businesses find value and success using social media tools like Twitter to grow their business. What I observe however, are a lot of folks dabbling in Twitter who haven’t really discovered how to engage and use it effectively. Worse, I see many businesses using Twitter to constantly blast out product/service announcements without ever engaging with their followers. In the post I talk about and give examples on how to get connected and engaged with those in your local market; and a strategy for using Twitter as a marketing tool.

I’ve been on Twitter for nearly two years. Like most, I’ve been on and off – hot and cold with using Twitter consistently. But, I’ve stuck with it for a few reasons:

  • I’ve met some incredible, funny, interesting and smart people on Twitter
  • I’ve had fun tweeting about baseball, football and life’s special moments and events
  • Twitter has helped build my personal brand, extend my reach and promote my business blog

Yes, Twitter has been a key channel and tool to help build community and spread awareness about my business. And, while it has been a great service to entertain and hear about breaking national/world news and keep in the know on technology trends; for me, and I assume for you, the rubber hits the road when it comes to providing value for the world you live and work in. And, for the most part, if you’re a small, local business that means in and around your town – your ideal marketplace.

Turning Skeptics into Believers?

So, I get it that many may be skeptical on the business value of Twitter. But I have to tell you, the Twitterverse is now full of amazing success stories of how small, local businesses have grown by embracing Twitter and other social media marketing strategies. For those who haven’t boarded the train, I sometimes wonder if it’s too late?  But the Chinese proverb comes to mind: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is today.”

In the post, I frame up how one fledgling, local coffee shop used Twitter to connect with their market and grow their business by up to 30 percent.
