Should you publish content in multiple formats?

What determines how many formats you should use to publish content in?

Some say the content your create for social media marketing should be published or re-purposed widely, through multiple formats or mediums. Just the other day Mike Volpe of HubSpot gave a webinar on “How to Manage Your Brand in Social Media.” And the concept of publishing in multiple formats: blog, podcast, video, photos, presentations, eBooks, news releases and so on was put forth.  Sounds good. But I wonder how practical it is for the small business owner/marketer with limited resources,  know-how and perhaps, talents to pull this off effectively.

In this video I discuss my take on the issue and suggest asking a different question entirely. One that has more to do with how a content producer is creative, and what medium(s) may be best suited to channel their creative output. And, what about the audience? Sure, publishing in multiple formats lends itself to broader distribution of the content – and reaching more folks based on their preferences. But, given one’s skills, resources, creative style, etc., what’s the best strategy? Your thoughts? By the way, I may stick to writing. I think I suck at video blogging…but wait, that’s another medium to leverage!

Nice post. I agree that the comfort and capabilities of the content creator are a factor to be considered. But an ever more important factor is the type and format of content that your audience (persona) wants to consume and prefers. If your audience does not like video, then creating videos (even if that is what you prefer) will not be as effective as creating other content.

Thanks Mike, you raise a valid point and worth considering when planning your content marketing. Focusing on your market persona is king.
